Old Florida Heritage Highway
Just south of Gainesville, the Old Florida Heritage Highway consists of 48 miles of U.S. 441 and adjacent loop/spur roads that provide a vista of rural countryside draped with Spanish hanging moss, cattle, state parks and historic towns. You can now explore parts of the highway through cell phone tours. Take a tour of Paynes Prairie State Preserve or the town of Evinston. (Visit this website again, more tours will be added including the towns of Micanopy, Rochelle and Cross Creek – Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings Historic State Park.)

Evinston:
Dial and Discover the history of
Evinston. Use your cell phone
to learn all about the town’s
beginning in the 1880s, when
Captain William Drayton Evins
granted a right-of-way for the
Florida Southern railroad to
go through his property. Hear
about the churches, agriculture,
railroad depot and what the old
country store and post office,
now listed on the National
Register of Historic Places, were
like in the 1930s. Evinston Wood & Swink Post Office (since 1882) is on the National Register of Historic Places. Local seasonal produce from Freddie Wood's garden is available for sale at the Wood & Swink Store. The annual migration of Sandhill Cranes is also a great sight in Evinston. Paynes Prairie:
Dial and Discover Paynes Prairie, known for its outstanding wildlife viewing opportunities including bison, cracker horses and cattle, alligators, sandhill cranes, and over 270 bird species. The main feature of the preserve is a 16,000 acre freshwater marsh/wet prairie. Paynes Prairie Preserve State Park is recognized as one of the most significant natural and cultural areas in Florida. It is the first preserve in the Florida Park System and was nominated to the National Register of Natural Landmarks in 1974. Discover Paynes Prairie through your cell phone. Admission Fee: $5.00 per vehicle. Limit 2-8 people per vehicle. $2.00 Pedestrians, bicyclists, extra passengers, passengers in vehicle with holder of Annual Individual Entrance Pass.
